Why we chose this

Ice is the season that quietly shrinks how far people go - and a rubber cane tip on a frozen path simply has nothing to hold onto, however carefully you place it. We chose this attachment because it stays on the cane through the winter rather than being something to remember and carry: the prongs flip down when you need them and flip up out of the way at the door, so the cane works normally indoors. The five-prong plate spreads the contact over a wider area than a single spike, and the same prongs help on sand, gravel, and soft grass - so it earns its place beyond the frozen months. One honest note: fitting it takes a screwdriver, so someone may need to help with the initial install.

Good to know

  • This fits with screws rather than clipping on - you tighten it through rubber pads on both sides of the shaft with a Phillips screwdriver. Many PwP find that a job for someone else, and the good news is it is a one-time fitting: once on, it stays on for the season.
  • It comes as a pair, so for a single cane you have a spare, or you can fit both a cane and a walker.
  • Check the flip-up mechanism when it arrives - if it needs a hand rather than a foot to flip, doing it seated just inside the door is easier and steadier than bending over on a doorstep. And do flip it up indoors: five steel prongs on tile or wood is slippery, which is the opposite of the point.

"This attachment clamps onto the shaft of a cane, crutch, or walker and puts five carbon steel prongs at the base for use on ice, packed snow, and wet ground. The prongs bite into surfaces where a rubber tip has nothing to hold onto. It also helps on sand, loose gravel, and soft grass, where a flat tip tends to sink or slide.

When you come indoors, a push mechanism flips the prong plate up along the outside of the shaft so it sits clear of the floor and you walk on your normal tip again. Flipping it up also keeps the steel off cement and paving, where it would otherwise wear down.

It fixes on permanently with screws through rubber pads on either side of the shaft, so the attachment stays put and the pads keep it from marking the cane. Supplied as a pair, with two sets of rubber pads and both 1" and 0.5" screws. A Phillips screwdriver is needed to fit it.

  • Bites into ice, packed snow, and wet ground with five carbon steel prongs
  • Flips up along the shaft with a push mechanism so you can walk indoors on your normal tip
  • Clamps to canes, crutches, and walkers using the included screws and rubber pads
  • Grips on sand, loose gravel, and soft grass as well as ice
  • Includes a pair of tips, two sets of rubber pads, and both 1" and 0.5" screw sets
  • Pads the clamp on both sides so it will not slide or scratch the shaft

To fit: hold one rubber pad and the tip mechanism against the cane shaft, then place the second rubber pad and the clamp on the opposite side with the screw holes lined up. Tighten the screws on both sides with a Phillips screwdriver until the attachment is locked and will not rotate on the shaft. Use the screw length that suits the shaft - both 1" and 0.5" sets are included. Check the tightness again after the first few outings.

In use: push the mechanism to flip the prong plate down before going outside, and flip it back up along the shaft before coming indoors. Walking on the steel prongs across cement, paving, tile, or wood wears them down and gives less grip than your normal rubber tip.

Care: wipe the prongs and clamp dry after use in snow, slush, or salted conditions - carbon steel will rust if left wet. Check the screws stay tight through the season and replace the rubber pads if they compress or perish.
