Why we chose this

Assisted movement is a daily reality for many care partners, and the difference between a good belt and a poor one shows up in whether it stays where you put it. We chose this version for the metal buckle with locking teeth - it grips the webbing rather than relying on friction, so the belt holds its adjustment through repeated sit-to-stands without needing to be retightened. The 500 lb capacity and cotton webbing make it the more robust of the two belts we stock. It takes a moment longer to thread than a click-together buckle, which is the trade-off for that extra security.

Good to know

  • The metal buckle needs the strap threaded through it, so it takes slightly more hand dexterity to fasten than a click-together buckle. If the person wearing it wants to put it on independently, the plastic quick-release version is the easier option.
  • Measure the waist over the clothing that will normally be worn, then size up — many PwP find the extra length useful over a jumper or dressing gown.
  • Worth knowing that washing the belt inside a mesh laundry bag stops the metal buckle knocking around and shortening the life of the webbing.
  • This belt has no separate handles — the care partner grips the webbing directly. If you want dedicated padded handholds, look at the six-handle gait belt instead.

Size

The Transfer Belt with Metal Buckle gives a care partner something firm to hold onto during assisted standing, walking and transfers — moving between bed, chair, wheelchair or commode. Instead of taking hold of an arm or a handful of clothing, the person helping holds the belt itself, which is steadier for them and more dignified for the person being supported.

The heavy-duty metal buckle has locking teeth that bite into the webbing to keep the belt from loosening during a movement, and a quick-release action to take it off once the transfer is done. An elastic loop holds the spare strap length tidy so nothing dangles. The webbing is 2" wide 100% cotton, which stays flexible and sits comfortably against the body.

Available in 54", 60" and 72" lengths, with a 500 lb weight capacity. Hand or machine washable — washing in a mesh bag protects the buckle.

  • Locks with a heavy-duty metal buckle with locking teeth to resist slipping during a transfer
  • Releases quickly once the movement is complete
  • Adjusts to fit a wide range of waist sizes; choose 54", 60" or 72"
  • Constructed from 2" wide 100% cotton webbing for flexibility and comfort
  • Includes an elastic loop to secure excess strap length
  • Supports up to 500 lbs

Fasten around the waist over clothing with the buckle at the front, similar to a regular belt. Thread the strap through the metal buckle and pull until the belt is snug but a flat hand still slides underneath. Tuck the excess strap into the elastic loop. The person assisting takes hold of the belt webbing - never the clothing - and stays close throughout the movement. Not intended for lifting a person's full body weight unaided.
