Why we chose this

Stepping over the wall of a bath asks you to stand on one leg, shift your weight, and clear a fixed height - on a wet surface, in a confined space. It is one of the most common places in the home where people hesitate mid-movement, and a grab bar does not really solve it because the step itself is still there. A transfer bench does, by turning the whole thing into a seated slide. We chose this one for the 400 lb capacity, which is well above the usual, and the reversible seat back, which means it fits either handing of bathroom rather than only one.

Good to know

  • Measure the bathroom before ordering the bench needs the tub wall to sit between its legs, and it is 30.5" wide by 22" deep with height adjusting up to 23.5". Worth knowing that because part of the bench sits outside the tub, the shower curtain will not simply close in front of it; many people tuck the curtain behind the seat back or add a second curtain inside the tub, and it is easier to plan that before the first use than to discover it mid-bath.
  • Decide which side you want the seat back on before assembly - it reverses, but it is simpler to set once and leave it.

A transfer bench spans the wall of the bath - two legs stand outside the tub, two stand inside it. You sit down on the outer section, then slide across to the inner section, so the leg-over-the-rim movement is taken out of the process entirely. For anyone who finds raising a foot over a tub wall difficult, or who hesitates at that particular step, this changes the shape of the task rather than just adding something to hold.

Leg height adjusts with push pins, and the seat back reverses to either side so the bench works in a left- or right-hand bathroom. The textured seat has built-in drainage holes so water runs through rather than pooling. Non-skid rubber feet sit on an aluminum frame that will not corrode.

30.5" wide, 22" deep, adjusting up to 23.5" high, and supports up to 400 lb. Arrives semi-assembled. Wipe down with a damp cloth and bathroom disinfectant, then air dry.

  • Spans the tub wall so you can sit and slide across rather than stepping over the rim
  • Adjusts leg height with push pins; seat back reverses to either side to suit the bathroom
  • Drains through a textured seat so water runs away instead of pooling underneath
  • Stands on non-skid rubber feet with a corrosion-resistant aluminum frame
  • Supports up to 400 lb; 30.5" wide x 22" deep; arrives semi-assembled

Arrives semi-assembled. Position the bench so two legs stand inside the tub and two stand outside, with the tub wall between them. Set all four legs to the same height using the push pins, checking each pin has clicked fully through its hole before use. Fit the seat back on whichever side suits the bathroom. Press down firmly on both ends of the seat to confirm all four feet are flat and the bench does not rock before sitting on it. In use, sit on the outer section first, then slide across to the inner section. To clean, wipe down with a wet cloth and bathroom disinfectant, then air dry.
